About me-
hello, welcome to my site! My name is jack, i’m a composer based in boston. i write both instrumental concert music as well as electronic fixed media, but have recently been focusing on the latter. i am from virginia beach, virginia, though it feel more accurate to say the hampton roads area. i moved to boston in september of 2022 to study composition at the boston conservatory, though halfway through my junior year required a medical leave of absence where I currently remain. I work at a medical dispensary in allston and am focusing on my health, creating where i can.
About my music-
music, to me, is the means i have found most comfortable to explore my own interests, thoughts, and feelings with the greater goal of understanding myself, expressing myself, and making sense of my life, all of which have proved difficult tasks. my music is often described as creepy, uncanny, or something that “would sound good in a sci-fi/horror movie.” i generally like these descriptions as the visual idea and atmosphere behind the music is an essential part to how i creative and interact with it. these atmospheres on which i ruminate and attempt to recreate in and base upon my pieces tend to be dark and mysterious, in some ways unsettling, but simultaneously recognizable as comforting and beautiful.
My inspirations-
i must admit my tastes are a little old fashioned as my favorite composers are bach and beethoven, but some of my other favorites who have also influenced me greatly are the second viennese school, especially webern; some russian and hungarian music from the 20th century such as shostakovich, stravinsky, or bartok and ligeti; and the minimalists- philip glass, julius eastman, terry riley. Some other, more recent composers who have had a great impact on me are alvin lucier, reiko fueting, heather stebbins, victoria cheach, mischa salkind-pearl, and luciano lopez-parnetti. Some of my favorite bands are the smiths, oingo boingo, and simon and garfunkel. in other mediums i have taken great inspiration from directors such as stanley kubrick and robert eggers, from writers like james joyce and jean-paul sartre, and visual artists like saul steinberg and etienne louis boullee.
